At LGBTI+ Gozo, we are continually working to strengthen the support available within our community. We are therefore very pleased to share that we are now offering free and donation-based social work and counselling services, expanding the ways in which individuals, families, and allies can access meaningful, professional support.
This service is delivered by a warranted and experienced social worker who has generously joined us on a voluntary basis, bringing years of expertise and a deep commitment to community wellbeing.
What Is Social Work — and Why Does It Matter for LGBTI+ Communities?
Social work is a profession grounded in human rights, social justice, and respect for diversity. At its core, it focuses on supporting individuals to navigate life’s challenges, strengthen their wellbeing, and access the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
Where social work meets the LGBTI+ community is particularly important.
LGBTI+ individuals may, at times, face unique social and structural challenges, including stigma, discrimination, family rejection, barriers to services, or simply a lack of safe spaces to be fully themselves. Social work plays a vital role in addressing these realities by offering:
Affirming and inclusive support that respects identity and lived experience
Advocacy to challenge inequality and promote equal access to services
Guidance through complex systems, such as healthcare, education, housing, or legal support
Emotional and practical support during times of transition, uncertainty, or crisis
Importantly, social work is not about telling people what to do. Rather it is about working collaboratively, empowering individuals to make their own informed choices in a safe and supportive environment.

What Does Social Work Support Look Like?
Social work is about more than just advice. A social worker walks alongside individuals through different life experiences, offering guidance, advocacy, and practical support in a safe and respectful environment.
Here are some of the ways this service can support members of the LGBTI+ community:
A Safe and Confidential Space
You can access one-to-one sessions in a non-judgemental environment, where you are free to speak openly, explore your thoughts, and feel heard and respected.
Exploring Your Strengths and Support Systems
Social work can help you identify personal and community resources, empowering you to build resilience and make informed decisions.
Connecting You to Services
Whether you need healthcare, housing support, legal guidance, or other services, we can link you to the right resources based on your individual needs.
Support During the Coming Out Process
This includes support both for individuals and for families, helping everyone involved process emotions and navigate this journey in a healthy and supportive way.
Identity Exploration
A social worker can provide accurate, affirming information and space to explore identity without pressure or assumptions.
Advocacy and Rights
We actively advocate for equal access, dignity, and respect, and can support individuals in addressing discrimination or barriers they may face.
Liaising with Schools, Workplaces, and Services
Where needed, support can extend to working with institutions to ensure individuals are treated fairly and have access to appropriate support.
Crisis Support
In more urgent situations, including mental health concerns, family conflict, or housing instability, social work can provide immediate support and guidance.
Promoting Inclusion and Belonging
Ultimately, social work aims to strengthen connection, inclusion, and participation within the community.
Our Commitment
At the heart of this service is a simple belief: Everyone deserves respect, dignity, and the freedom to be who they are.
We are proud to offer a space that is:
Safe
Confidential
Non-judgemental
Rooted in genuine care and support
